Agency Releases Report on Deaths in Texas Car Accidents

Drivers know that their will almost always be traffic when they head off to their destinations. Most cities in Texas, especially Austin, have struggled with traffic problems for years. More cars on the road can lead to more car accidents, which is becoming a serious issue within the state.

The Texas Department of Transportation examined fatalities caused in motor vehicle accidents. The report looked at 2010 numbers, which is the most recent data available. Texas, like many other states, saw a drop in the number of deaths caused in motor vehicle accidents. In 2010, there were 3,028 deaths over some 234 billion miles driven within the state, or 1.29 deaths for every 100 million miles.

However, even though the state has seen a near 15 percent decrease in deaths over the last four years, one aspect is concerning to officials. Texas remains above the national average of 1.11 deaths per 100 million miles, which could mean that car accidents happening within the state are much more dangerous than those in other locations.

One of the reasons that some believe the state continues to have a problem with traffic deaths is the reluctance to pass laws that deal with distracted driving. Each year, legislators propose rules, only to see them fail to gain the support necessary to become law.

Many other states throughout the country have either cellphone or texting bans in place, which has helped reduce the number of car accidents caused by distracted drivers. Those who take their eyes off of the road for even a short time can find that they do not have the time to take the quick action to avoid an accident.
