Daydreaming leads to many car accidents, study says

Can daydreaming really be as dangerous as a new study claims? Unfortunately yes. A new study found that daydreaming may contributed to half of all car accidents in the U.S.

Researchers interviewed a thousand drivers involved in car accidents. The study found that 52 percent of drivers admitted to daydreaming or their mind wandering just before a car accident occurred. Thirteen percent of these drivers admitted to intense mind wandering just before being in a car accident.

The researchers said that daydreaming can cause drivers to underestimate or overlook road hazards. Drivers are also more likely to make driving errors or mistakes while daydreaming.

Other studies have found that daydreaming while driving makes drivers stay driving at the same speed instead of slowing down and speeding up. Drivers also look straight ahead most of the time instead of checking their side mirrors.

Studies concluded that daydreaming while driving is a safety risk for everyone on the road. Drivers who are daydreaming often look straight ahead and do not monitor the environment around them, making them less aware of other cars on the road and more likely to be in an accident.

Daydreaming is considered a form of distracted driving, which has been proven to be very dangerous during the last few years. Drivers can prevent this dangerous behavior by constantly monitoring the road and their environment while driving. Drivers should also check their side and review mirrors routinely to make sure they are aware of other dangerous drivers possibly on the road.
