Texas may ban texting while driving

Texas may finally ban texting while driving if the state legislature passes a proposed bill aimed at reducing distracted driving accidents in Texas. If Texas lawmakers pass Senate Bill 28, texting while driving would be prohibited for Texas drivers.

In 2009, more than 100,000 vehicles were in accidents caused by distracted driving, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. They also reported that many of these accidents were caused by drivers who were texting.

Law enforcement associations and national safety advocates have voiced support for the bill, stating that there is proof that texting and using a cellphone while driving contributes to more car accidents. Law enforcement officials say that they have seen many serious and fatal accidents caused by distracted drivers and that something needs to be done to try and prevent these accidents from continuing to happen.

Supporters in Texas are not alone in supporting a ban for texting while driving. Many other states have already prohibited texting while driving and safety advocates hope that Texas will become one of those states.

The constant use of cellphones has led to an increase in distracted driving accidents in Texas and throughout the country. In 2009, 5,474 people were killed in distracted driving car accidents, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Eighteen percent of those accidents were attributed to cellphone use.

The Texas legislature will take up this matter this spring and safety advocates are hoping for a change from previous years. If the legislature passes the bill, they would become one of 40 states in the nation to ban texting while driving.
