Motorcycle accidents result in injuries for older adults

Motorcycle accidents are all too common in Texas and throughout the U.S. Despite safety campaigns to try and reduce motorcycle accident fatalities, a new study found that more people over the age of 60 are being injured in motorcycle accidents.

Older adults are more likely to be injured in motorcycle accidents that require hospitalization, according to a study that looked at motorcycle crash injuries between 2001 and 2008. The study found that adults over the age of 60 had the highest motorcycle injury rate compared to all adult motorcycle riders in the U.S.

Researchers reported that there were 1.5 million injuries caused by motorcycle accidents during 2001 and 2008 in the U.S. People between the age of 20 and 39 suffered the most injuries, with more than 920,000 injuries reported. People between the age of 40 and 59 had more than 466,000 injuries and people over the age of 60 had more than 65,000 injuries reported after a motorcycle accident.

The study showed that the injury rate increased for all age groups of motorcyclists but riders over the age of 60 saw the highest increase in motorcycle accident injuries. Injuries caused by motorcycle accidents to riders over the age of 60 increased by 247 percent from 2001 and 2008.

The study also found that older motorcycle riders were three times more likely to require hospitalization after an accident compared to younger motorcyclists. Older adults have a significant risk of injury if they are involved in a motorcycle accident. Adults over the age of 60 are more likely to suffer fractures and dislocations after a motorcycle accident. They were also more likely to suffer injury to their internal organs as well as brain injuries.

Researchers said that older adults may suffer more serious injuries because of the physical changes to their body and their ability to ride motorcycles as safely as they used to. The researchers suggested that older motorcyclists take their physical and mental changes into consideration before riding a motorcycle and older motorcyclists should also take training classes to make sure they understand new safe riding techniques.
