Veteran police officer dies in freeway truck accident

Crowded roads run throughout the state of Texas. Family vehicles drive right alongside 18-wheelers and no one thinks twice until there is a truck accident and a life is lost in one case, the life of a veteran police officer on his day off. This story happened recently in the Texas Hill Country a few hours outside of Austin on Interstate 10.

Two veteran officers returning from a hunting trip stopped to help a stranded driver who had lost his trailer after it was hit by a pickup truck. The bump loosened the trailer from the car and sent it into the left lane of traffic. Meanwhile, the driver of the car pulled off to the right side of the road.

As the officers stopped to assist, an 18-wheeler swerved to avoid the trailer and crashed into the crowd of cars parked at the side of the road, smashing one of the vehicles into a bridge guardrail and pinning the couple inside.

The officers were standing on the bridge at the time. One went over the guardrail; hedied at the scene. The other officer was one of several people who were injured. He was flown to a nearby hospital for treatment.

No charges were immediately filed against the big rig driver because the accident is still under investigation. Authorities do not suspect he was intoxicated. However, they are not ruling out fatigue as a factor.

When people are killed in car accidents as a result of negligence, a personal injury attorney can help the affected parties fight for compensation for their losses.
