Several wrongful death claims arose from same Texas incident

Approximately three years ago, a tragic accident occurred in Texas that took the life of a motorcyclist. Another motorist was also involved in the crash. Criminal charges and civil lawsuits were filed in the wrongful death situation.

Recently, the other motorist involved in the 2013 fatal collision pleaded guilty to intoxication manslaughter in court. Previously, he was admitted to a state hospital after he had been deemed incompetent to stand trial. The accident occurred after the man had been drinking in a local establishment, and discovered upon leaving that his vehicle would not start.

At the time of the accident, he asked another man to push his truck into the road so he could pop the clutch and get the vehicle moving. While the vehicle was in the wrong lane, the motorcyclist ran into it and died. The man who had helped push the vehicle into the wrong lane was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to probation for 10 years.

Civil claims were filed against the owner of an establishment for his role in serving copious amounts of alcohol to the man who was subsequently jailed for intoxication manslaughter. Apparently, it is not the first time the business owner was sued after a drunk driver left his place and caused a fatal accident. A Texas personal injury attorney often helps families whose loved ones have been killed by drunk drivers. Typically, the process begins by launching an investigation into a wrongful death claim to help identify all possible sources of liability and determine the maximum amount of damages to which the person filing the claim may be entitled if the case is successful in court.
